Laser ‘toys’ which look like pointers can be bought online and imported easily. Such ‘toys’ may not meet safety standards, the variety of such devices is a potential public safety concern. Increasingly eye departments are reporting maculopathy in children following exposure to these lasers. For further information click here

To mark World Sight Day today (October 8), there has been a call to governments and health agencies to help halt myopia progression globally by funding research.
Researchers warn that more than one billion people are at risk of going blind globally by 2050 if the emerging myopia epidemic continues
The researchers predict that as a result of the growing incidence, up to one billion people who suffer with myopia will have a “significant” risk of going blind.
Currently, it is estimated that more than two billion people suffer with myopia around the world. However, researchers say that without behavioral interventions or the development of optical treatments, this could reach five billion in the next 35 years.

Many thanks to all those who organised the Eye Care event in Barnsley last week to mark Eye Health Week. I have already benefited from the contacts I made by being able to organise prompt support for patients from the agencies who were there!
Many thanks for the Leeds Diabetic Group for making me feel so welcome and it is lovely to get a thank you and positive feedback….
Hi Barbara, many thanks for your splendid presentation last Monday. It was very interesting and educational and I have received lots of very positive responses from people in the group who all learned something new about their eye care. I saw Christine from Diabetes UK on Saturday and thanked her for putting us in touch with you and to recommend you other Diabetes groups in the area.
Thanks again. Joan
I’ve been asked to talk to my local diabetic group. The discussion will be on diabetic eye care. The talk is Monday 7th September at 7pm at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. I am looking forward to meeting them.
